Unlike other imaging techniques, ultrasound uses no radiation. For example this is the reason it is the preferred method for viewing a developing fetus during pregnancy.

Preparing for an Ultrasound Scan?

  • Need to get an appointment prior to coming
  • Most procedures require 4 hours fasting before the procedure (water is allowed). Ask our staff for more details.
  • During a scan of the bladder:
    • Drink 1 liter of fluid (water/juice) within 15 minutes to 1 hour prior to appointment time
    • Do not empty your bladder for a bladder scan (Bladder must be full during the scan)
  • During the scan of the abdomen 12 hour fasting is required
  • For an examination of the gallbladder, liver, pancreas, or spleen, you may be told to eat a fat-free meal the evening before your test and then to fast until the procedure. However you can continue to drink water and take any medications as instructed.
  • Ask our staff for any clarifications.

What Happens in an Ultrasound scan

An Ultrasound scan test usually takes about 30-60 minutes. Here's what happens:

  • In certain scans before the exam, you will need to change into a hospital gown and you will most likely be lying down on a bed with a section of your body exposed for the test.
  • During the scan medical personnel and radiologist will apply a special lubricating jelly to your skin.
  • Using the transducer on the gel, the appropriate image of the organ or tissue part will be printed.
  • After the procedure, the gel will be cleaned off of your skin. You will be free to go about your normal activities after the procedure has finished. You will then be advised to meet your doctor with the Ultrasound scan report later.

Doppler Scanning

what is a doppler scan

Doppler Scanning, which can be used to determine how blood ¬flows through your vessels, and helps doctors study major blood vessels for clots or plaque and evaluate blood flow in the heart, kidneys limbs and other major organs. A Doppler ultrasound is a risk-free and pain-free procedure that requires little preparation. The test provides your doctor with important information about the flow of blood through your major arteries and veins. It can also reveal blocked or reduced blood flow through narrowed areas in the arteries, which could eventually lead to a stroke.
Western hospital provides a doppler scanning services in Sri Lanka. They include:

  • Hand
  • Neck
  • Stomach
  • Leg
  • Arms
  • Hips
  • Pelvic area
  • Specific arteries and blood vessels (e.g. Carotid Artery, Iliac Vessels)

  • Some conditions detectable from the scans include:

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein deep inside your body (usually in the leg or hip regions)
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein deep inside your body (usually in the leg or hip regions)
  • Arteriosclerosis, a narrowing and hardening of the arteries that supply blood to the legs and feet
  • Thromboangiitis Obliterans, a rare disease in which the blood vessels of the hands and feet become inflamed and swollen
  • Vascular tumors in your arms or legs
  • A Doppler ultrasound can help determine the blood pressure within your arteries. It can also show how much blood is currently flowing through your arteries and veins.

Preparing for a Doppler Scan?

  • Need to get an appointment prior to coming
  • If you're a smoker, your doctor may ask you to stop smoking for several hours before the test.
  • For Doppler scans on your belly
    • Need 6-12 hours fasting (meals only)
    • Clear fluids and regular medications are allowed
  • For pelvic Doppler scans
    • Drink 1 liter of water 1 hour prior to test
    • A full bladder is required for the test
  • Hand/Neck/Leg Doppler scans
    • Fasting is not required
    • Leave all jewelry at home
    • Generally, wear loose clothes

  • In certain scans before the exam, you will need to change into a hospital gown and you will most likely be lying down on a bed with a section of your body exposed for the test. You’ll need to remove clothing, jewelry, and any other objects from the area that will be studied.

  • Using the transducer on the gel, the appropriate image of the organ or tissue part will be taken.
  • To examine your arteries, the person administering the test may place blood pressure cuffs around various areas of your body. The cuffs will generally be applied to your thigh, calf, ankle, or different points along your arm. These cuffs help compare the blood pressure in different parts of your leg or arm.
  • After the procedure, the gel will be cleaned off of your skin. You will be free to go about your normal activities after the procedure has finished. You will then be advised to meet your doctor with the Doppler Ultrasound scan report later.

ECG

what is ECG

Western Hospital provides ECG services in Sri Lanka. An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a simple test that can be used to check your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity. Sensors attached to the skin are used to detect the electrical signals produced by your heart each time it beats. These signals are recorded by a machine and are looked at by a doctor to see if they’re unusual. ECG services in Sri Lanka are available in most centers.

An ECG can help detect:

  • arrhythmias where the heart beats too slowly, too quickly, or irregularly
  • coronary heart disease – where the heart’s blood supply is blocked or interrupted by a build-up of fatty substances
  • heart attacks where the supply of blood to the heart is suddenly blocked
  • cardiomyopathy where the heart walls become thickened or enlarged
  • A series of ECGs can also be taken over time to monitor a person already diagnosed with a heart condition or taking medication known to potentially affect the heart.

How is an ECG undertaken

An ECG generally takes 10 minutes. Here's what happens:

  • Initially a nurse may ask you remove your upper clothing, and your chest may need to be shaved or cleaned.
  • Generally, the test involves attaching a number of small, sticky sensors called electrodes to your arms, legs and chest. These are connected by wires to an ECG recording machine.
  • The test itself usually only lasts a few minutes, and you maybe told to consult a doctor.
